Northside's Womack verbally commits to ECU
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The first college football team interested in Joe Womack now has word that the Northside High senior quarterback will play for them.
Womack made a verbal commitment to play for East Carolina University as confirmed by himself and Monarchs head coach Bob Eason.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound athlete made his verbal in June as he was preparing for his third season as Northside's varsity signal-caller. Womack said ECU is looking at playing him at either quarterback or wide receiver.
"But whatever they want me to do I'll do," he said following the Monarchs' season-opening 17-0 victory over White Oak Friday night.
While ECU showing the initial interest proved the primary reason for Womack's decision, it wasn't the lone one. He felt more comfortable attending the school in Greenville.
"I like the coaching staff and it is close to home," said Womack, also an important contributor on Northside's basketball team.
And now that he is committed, Womack can enjoy his senior season and focus on leading Northside to an East Central 2-A Conference title and a deep run in the NCHSAA 2-A playoffs. Womack has helped his team to two consecutive Eastern Regional finals.
"Last year I was nervous (trying to impress colleges)," he said. "But this year it will be a little easier."
Eason concurred.
"That will take a lot of pressure off him so he can have fun playing," he said.
