Several locals earn 1-A regional crowns

Lejeune hosted NCHSAA 1-A East Regional

May 11, 2008 12:24 am

Several local athletes took home titles in the NCHSAA East Regional championship aboard Camp Lejeune on Saturday.

Lejeune's Brandon Carter, Dixon's Tyler Whaley, Cornelius Nixon and John Pletl and the Bulldogs' 4x400 relay team all qualified for next week's state championships by finishing first in their respective events in the regional competition.

Carter won the 800-meter dash with a time of 2 minutes, 6 seconds, bettering the second-place time by three seconds for the sixth-place Devilpups.

Meanwhile, the four victories by Dixon lifted the Bulldogs to fourth. Pamlico won the boys team title, followed by Topsail and Perquimans. Whaley won the 3,200 in 11:25, bettering the second-place runner by three seconds. Whaley was also third in the 1,600. Nixon claimed the 300 hurdles in 40.90 seconds with the runner-up coming in 0.30 later. Pletl seized the discus with a throw of 139 feet, 7½ inches, winning the championship by ½ inch. Pletl was also sixth in the shot put.

Dixon's 4x400 relay team of Chris Lawson, Emmanuel Jenkins, Nixon and James Hansley won in 3:37.1. And while these were the lone champions, there were plenty of other top 10 placers.

Jenkins was second in the 400 at 52.4 and eighth in the 200; Dixon's Alex Brown was sixth in the 800 and tied for 10th in the 1,600 with teammate Adam Ankney, who was also fourth in the 3,200. The Devilpups' Evan Jackson was second in the 3,200 at 11:28 and fifth in the 1,600; Lawson was fifth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump while Brandon Jones was sixth in the high jump. The Devilpups' Duane Thompson was fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump and Nixon was ninth in the long jump while Dixon's Tony Scott was eighth in the triple jump. Lejeune's Chance Willerford was ninth in the 3,200.

The Bulldogs' 4x100 relay team was third while Lejeune was eighth in that event and third in the 4x800. Dixon was fourth in the 4x800.

Meanwhile, Lejeune was fourth and Dixon was seventh in the girls meet won by Topsail.

Dixon's Tory McCarty was second in the 100 with a time of 17.20 while Lejeune's 4x200 relay team was second at 1:52.6, second in the 4x400 relay at 4:33 and second in the 4x800 in 11:33.

Nicole Horne of Dixon was third in the discus and teammate Michaelle Horne was fifth. Ahrielle Jackson of Lejeune was fourth in the triple jump while teamates Sparkle Reeves was sixth and the Devilpups' Missy Harris was fourth in the 400. The Bulldogs' Semone Jones was third in the 3,200 and fourth and teammate Sarah Brown was eighth in the 800 while the Devilpups' Alyssa Teierle was sixth and teammate Jasmine Mack was ninth.

Jones was also fourth in the 1,600, followed by Lejeune's Valeria Martinez and Brown. Dixon's Ashley Sekela was eighth. Martinez was also fifth in the 3,200, Brown was seventh and Sekela was 10th.

Lejeune's Jasmine Benton (sixth) and Dixon's Angela Chinn (seventh) and Javada Hunter (ninth) were each in the long jump. Ashley Watson of Lejeune was eighth in the shot put.

"The meet well," said Lejeune girls head coach Debbie Bryant. "We had nine girls and five boys qualify for the state meet."
