Croatan upsets Southwest
Croatan got the low-scoring battle it wanted and escaped with a 1-0 victory over host Southwest in the first round of the NCHSAA 2-A playoffs on Wednesday.
Kayla Churchill found the net in the 26th minute as the Cougars knocked off their East Central Conference rivals. Emily Hall gained control of the ball and cleared it out to Churchill, who ran onto it and punched it in from about 12 yards.
"We were able to neutralize their through balls from our midfield," Croatan head coach Paul Slater said. "The midfield did a very good job of making sure they didn't have time with the ball."
Croatan, a wild card from the ECC, limited Southwest to six shots on goal and Cougars goalkeeper Leilani Gauta turned back five of them to earn the shutout.
"We had a couple of good chances, a couple of real good looks, we just couldn't seal the deal," SWO head coach John Sweeney said. "I thought we came out a little flat in the first half and they were ready for the increased intensity of the playoffs.
"We played them twice during the regular season and beat them both times, and (winning is) so hard to do three times especially against a good team like Croatan."
Sasha Preddie had five saves between the pipes for the Stallions (11-8-1) who were the No. 3 seed from the ECC. Holly Barber was the lone senior for Southwest, meaning 10 starters are expected to return next season.
"For a team that is more than half freshmen, to earn third place in the East Central and to make it to the playoffs is an impressive feat," Sweeney said. "I'm very excited about the future of this program. With the players who are coming to us in the next couple of years and the young players who we have, we're in great shape."

White Oak 12, D.H. Conley 0: White Oak's run at defending its NCHSAA 3-A state title got off to a strong start as the Vikings dominated D.H. Conley in the first round at White Oak.
Stephanie Rose led the way with four goals for the Vikings, the champion of the Mideastern 3-A/4-A Conference. She set the tempo by scoring her first goal within the first minute of the game.
"We had a real quick start," said WOHS head coach Buddy Carroll. "Stephanie got us out fast. She has always been able to find ways to score goals. That's a good thing."
The Vikings' offense continued to pound away at D.H. Conley as they were ahead 7-0 at halftime.
While the offense was attacking, D.H. Conley was limited to only one shot attempt.
"We really possessed the ball the whole game," Carroll said. "It was pretty one-sided the whole game. We are ready for the second round."
White Oak will host Southern Alamance Friday at 7 p.m. in the second round.
Emma Barber scored two goals, while Shelby Carroll, Krystal Tucker, Amanda Fenton, Sydney Hall, Jamie Haverty and Carly Baker each added a goal.

Dixon 8, James Kenan 0: At Dixon, that must have been some halftime speech by Kevin Hicks.
The host Bulldogs followed a stern intermission talk from its coach by tallying six second-half goals to pull away from James Kenan in the first round of the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs.
The Bulldogs led 2-0 at the break, but were unable to take advantage of many more chances. That sort of thing has haunted Dixon in recent games and Hicks was determined not to let James Kenan get back in contention.
"For the first time that I can remember I had to be a little bit harsh at halftime," Hicks recalled. "We were moving and passing the ball but we were shooting terribly and I don't know if it was a lack of focus or not having the desire to get after it."
All that changed during the second 40 minutes. Alex Scott scored off an assist from Amber Reid just 60 seconds into the second half to spark a four-goal burst in a matter of eight minutes.
Jamie Edens followed with a score three minutes later off an assist from Jenna Paramore while Chelsea D'Zurilla found the net three minutes later off a pass from Reid. Kara May Rice then scored one minute later off a pass from Sarah Bowman.
Paige Schoonover had scored off an assist from Scott and D'Zurilla found the net off a pass from Reid to provide the home squad a 2-0 edge. D'Zurilla and Jordan Evans each scored the Bulldogs' final two scores with each one coming off a pass from Rice.
"They realized they had to be more aggressive," Hicks said. "Our goal in the second half was to win each 50-50 ball."
Lesleigh Thompson made two saves for Dixon.

Hahne scored on an unassisted shot within the first five minutes of the game for the Wildcats (14-6-2), the No. 2 seed from the East Central Conference.
Hope Manghane held the Aces' offense down as she blocked all four of Holmes' shots.
Richlands will travel to North Lenoir on Saturday.

East Duplin 5, North Brunswick 0: At Leland, East Duplin finally took the next step forward for the program with a shutout over North Brunswick in the first round of the NCHSAA 2-A playoffs.
"It was a good win," said EDHS head coach Joey Jones. "This is new territory getting past the first round. We are excited about still staying in the playoffs."
Brittany Jones notched a hat trick to lead the Panthers, a wild card from the East Central Conference.
"She had a good night," Coach Jones said. "She found the net. We changed some people and put them in different spots."
Now East Duplin will prepare for ECC foe Swansboro in the second round. The Pirates have beaten the Panthers both times and Coach Jones said that familiarity could be an advantage for his girls.
"It helps us a little bit," he said. "We just try to learn from each of them."
Laura Outlaw and Jennifer Halso each scored a goal for the Panthers while Kelsey Sumner had two saves in goal.
