Jacksonville, WOHS advance with easy soccer wins
Cardinals, Vikes onto third round
BARCO - Seven has been Jacksonville's key number thus far in the soccer postseason.
Stephanie Spring found the net less than five minutes in and the Cardinals posted seven goals for the second straight contest en route to a 7-0 victory at Currituck in the second round of the NCHSAA 3-A soccer playoffs.
Jacksonville, the second seed from the Mideastern 3-A/4-A Conference, appears to be getting its groove back after this outing and Tuesday's 7-2 triumph over Washington followed a three-game scoreless streak.
"We were able to move the ball and created opportunities," said Cardinals head coach Dave Miller. "We started out scoring early, got a little sloppy to finish the first half, but we talked at halftime about playing more balls to feet and not being in such a hurry.
"We did that in the second half and were able to switch fields."
Spring found the net just 3 minutes, 30 seconds in after playing a pass from Jessica Barton. Britney Joiner then scored nearly six minutes later off another Barton assist. Nearly 18 minutes later, Barton scored herself, this coming from a pass from Casey Naylor that gave Jacksonville a 3-0 intermission edge.
Brittany Padilla scored the Cardinals first two second-half goals with the first coming off a pass from Spring and the other coming from Naylor, who later scored off an assist from Joiner. Michelle Lemaire later booted an unassisted goal.
"We still missed easy chances so we have to do a better job at that," Miller said.
Kerinn Hall made three saves for the Cardinals.
Currituck was the top seed from the Northeastern Coastal Conference.

White Oak 12, Southern Alamance 0: One round later and White Oak had the same result in the second round of the playoffs as the Vikings did in the first round.
Shelby Carroll and Stephanie Rose combined for eight goals and two-time defending state champion White Oak booted seven first-half scores in a triumph over Southern Alamance in the second round of the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs.
Carroll led the way with five goals and an assist while Rose followed with three goals and an assist. Rose gave the Vikings, the champion of the Mideastern 3-A/4-A Conference, the lead when she scored an unassisted goal just 5:29 in.
Kasie Drake, Amanda Fenton, Kristal Tucker and Carly Baker each added a goal. Emily Barber, Fenton and Baker also had assists for the Vikings, who tallied seven first-half goals in a first-round win over D.H. Conley on Wednesday.
"We really worked on finding different ways to get behind," said White Oak head coach Buddy Carroll. "Southern Alamance was not all that bad, we just got a bunch of breakaways and that is why we did not have so many assists."
Rea Segoviano made three saves for the Vikings. Southern Alamance was the third seed from the Mid-State Conference.
